Buxton Crescent Limited (Buxton), a company which operates a luxury hotel and spa in Buxton, has been sold to a national operator in conjunction with a global alternative investment fund following support from RWK Goodman.

The 81-bedroom Buxton Crescent spa hotel located in the Grade I-listed property originally built by the fifth Duke of Devonshire has been sold to national spa and hotel operator Champneys in partnership with Cheyne Capital, an alternative investment fund. The hotel opened in 2020 following a £70m restoration project, with the transaction facilitating the repayment of a £11.4m loan from Derbyshire County Council which was used to help fund the renovations.

The transaction team led by Katharine Mortimer advised on the sale, with support from partners James Worrall and Scott Preece, senior associate Janetta White, and solicitor Alicia Chown (Corporate), partner Richard Roth (Real Estate) and Tim Gofton (Employment).

CP Holdings and the Trevor Osborne Group are highly regarded real estate investors with a long-standing track record in large-scale regeneration and heritage-led development. CP Holdings has a broad international portfolio, with its European hotel portfolio comprising over 40 hotels, including the Ensana Health Spa Hotels group which offers market leading spa and medical-wellness stays. The Trevor Osborne Group has led landmark UK projects including the award-winning Oxford Castle regeneration and the UK’s first thermal spa hotel developments.

Philip Hoffbrand, director of CP Holdings, said: “Katharine and her team not only worked incredibly hard but remained claim and completely focused on the commercial objectives throughout a hugely complicated and protracted transaction. They were a genuine pleasure to work with and I would not hesitate to use them again.”

Founded in 1925, Champneys operates eight resorts, hotels and spas across the UK with a focus on strengthening their portfolio through heritage properties and traditional high-end spa experiences.

Alan Whiteley, CEO of Champneys, said: “Our 100th year is a celebration of wellness innovation, and Buxton Crescent perfectly aligns with our vision. We are thrilled to combine our expertise with this historic spa, blending centuries-old heritage with modern luxury and care.”
