Update on the Alex Lewis Float Foundation: Progress, Purpose and People
The Float Foundation, led by Alex Lewis, works to remove barriers of access, design and affordability and create pathways to independence. The Foundation is dedicated to making assistive technology affordable and accessible to everyone, empowering individuals to live more independent lives.
The Alex Lewis Float Foundation continues to make meaningful progress in its mission to support amputees and individuals living with limb loss, while raising awareness of the physical, emotional and practical challenges they face. Since its inception, the Foundation has combined inspirational fundraising, endurance sport and strong governance to extend its reach and impact.
The Foundation's mission and impact
Founded by Alex Lewis following his own life-changing experience with amputation, the Alex Lewis Float Foundation exists to help others rebuild confidence, independence and opportunity after limb loss. The Foundation focuses on practical support, advocacy and raising awareness, while promoting the message that life after amputation can be active, purposeful and fulfilling.
Recent fundraising challenges have included the Pig 2 Pig in 2024 when Alex hand cycled from the Pig in Harlyn Bay, to Falmouth Harbour, rowed 350 miles to Dover, hand cycled to the Pig at Bridge Place and then hand cycled 649 miles back to Harlyn Bay in Cornwall. Along the way he stopped at businesses (including RWK Goodman’s office in Bath), schools, universities and charities, to raise awareness of the FLOAT foundation, assistive technology and breaking down barriers that define what we believe people can achieve.
In 2025 Alex and his team took part in The Great River Race, a 21.6-mile river marathon boat race stretching from Millwall to Richmond. A stepping stone in Alex’s preparation for rowing the North Atlantic in 2026. In the same year Alex was awarded an honorary degree by King’s College London’s Department of Engineering in recognition of his charitable work and dedication as a motivational speaker, researcher, and disability advocate. A further honorary doctorate in engineering followed in January 2026 from The University of Bath, in recognition of Alex’s collaboration with researchers from the university to drive innovation in assistive technology.
The Alex Lewis North Atlantic Row
2026 brings an exciting new challenge for the Foundation as Alex and his crew embark on a 2,500 mile ocean row from St John, Newfoundland to Lymington UK, in the world’s only 12 person ocean rowing boat named Roxy.
With the aim of creating the largest fundraising opportunity for ALFF and Assistive Technology to date, the challenge is also designed to spark conversation about disability, rehabilitation and the possibilities that exist beyond injury. Alex will become the first physically disabled person to row the North Atlantic and the first quadruple amputee to row an ocean.
Funds raised through the challenge will contribute directly to the Foundation’s ongoing charitable work.

“When we complete this 2,500-mile crossing from Newfoundland to Lymington, we’ll have rowed for 55 to 65 days straight, three hours on and three hours off, through some of the most challenging conditions the North Atlantic can throw at us. ALNAR is the largest fundraising initiative for The ALFF, and it will be the first time a physically disabled person has made this crossing. It’s about showing what can be achieved when you fuse University research, an incredible crew and a quad amputee who only ever sees possibility.” Alex Lewis, Founder at Alex Lewis Trust.
