It has been just over 10 years since I started athletics and have definitely experienced many ups and downs that the sport has to offer. This year has been no exception - but I believe that the experiences that I have gained will allow me to develop as an athlete and as a person.

It’s been a very difficult couple of months after not being selected to compete at the European Championships in Swansea as I felt things were slowly coming together in order to take on the best athletes in Europe. I took me a while for it to get over the fact that it was the first Championship I had missed in my career. On the other hand, it gave me so much motivation to work even harder over the winter to prepare myself for the World Championships in Doha at the end of next year.

I decided to continue to train until September, as I didn’t want to cut my season short and went away for a few days in order to have a change of scenery, catch some sun and give my body a rest. But more importantly, prepare myself for a long hard winter in order me to perform next season.

I’m a firm believer that you must adopt the same values in sport and in your personal life. After the disappointment of the Europeans, I stumbled across this quote from Henry Ford that sums up my values, and I hope is somewhere out there in a fortune cookie:

“Life is a series of experiences, each of which makes us bigger, even though it is hard to realise this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us in our marching onward.”

In order to improve my performance, I decided to purchase an EMS machine (Electro Muscle Stimulate) with the funding I received from RWK Goodman. This machine has the capacity to contract your muscle via the electrical current passed through your muscle, which I hope help me to utilise the left side of my body more, which has been damaged due to my CP. Also, I hope it will aid my recovery after training sessions.

I thank RWK Goodman's medical negligence solicitors once again for their continued support and will keep you posted in my next blog with my winter training update and my indoor season competition plan.
