Whose rights are more fundamental when teaching on same-sex relationships?
The Department of Education (DfE) wants all independent schools to teach equality of same-sex relationships. That teaching would be consistent with Ofsted’s requirement for schools to understand and respect different lifestyle choices. However, the proposed move from recommending the teaching as good practice to making it compulsory by 2020 has angered some parts of the independent sector.

Property development overage – another cautionary tale
Overage is a common method for sellers to realise increased value for their land where, for example, a planning permission is subsequently obtained for development of the land. Properly drafted, an overage agreement can work for both parties by maximising value for the seller and de-risking potential overpayment by the buyer. However, it is vital that the agreement is clear as to what overage will be payable, on what basis and when. Mistakes can be costly!

Cohabitee wins fight for half of partners £1.7m home
A law graduate who lived with her partner won a legal fight yesterday that will leave her with half of a £1.7m home. The courts awarded Ms Ladwa half of the home despite arguments from her former partner, Ms Chapman, that she had funded the home and their lavish lifestyle entirely. The couple were engaged to be married but separated in 2016.

Android – Anticompetitive or innovative market leader?
The European Commission has fined Google 4.3 billion euros ($5bn) for using its dominant market position to sway the Android app market in their favour. Google has indicated they will challenge the decision. An appeal could make it months, if not years, before any fine is actually enforced - their previous 2.4 billion euro fine, from Sept 2017, has yet to be paid.
