Leading Asbestos Solicitor campaigns for justice for asbestos victims

Specialist Oxford asbestos solicitor Helen Childs - partner and head of industrial diseases at WK, is backing a campaign for justice for sufferers of illnesses like asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.

Asbestos was an incredibly widely used building material for many decades, and is still present in many schools, factories, shops, homes and public buildings. Thousands of people are diagnosed with asbestos-related illnesses every year, and the numbers continue to rise.

For those who came into contact with asbestos at work compensation claims can be pursued if the previous employers or their insurers can be traced. If not, desperately ill people were often left with nothing, having been handed a death sentence simply for turning up to work.

After many years of campaigning the Government introduced a scheme to compensate those who had been diagnosed with mesothelioma (an aggressive asbestos-related conditions) after July 25th 2012 and who found themselves in this position. Whilst far from perfect the scheme did at least ensure that desperately ill people and their families could ensure they didn’t have to add money worries to their other concerns.

However the scheme offers no assistance to people diagnosed with other asbestos-related illnesses, including lung cancer and asbestosis, or those who were not exposed at work. As a specialist solicitor Helen is backing a campaign for an extension of the scheme, to ensure other desperately ill people and their families don’t lose out.
