Compensation secured for family of grandfather who died due to negligent care in hospital

82 year old Mr S had been admitted to Tameside hospital after a fall at his home. After a transfer to Manchester Royal Infirmary for three months, he was returned to Tameside hospital to prepare for a discharge home. Mr S returned to Tameside hospital on 12 May 2017 where he suffered falls on 14, 17, 18 and 19 May. His final fall on 19 May caused a hip fracture requiring surgery. During his stay in hospital he sadly caught pneumonia and died on 31 May.

Ali Cloak and Becky Randel represented the family at the inquest into Mr S’s death, including Mr S’s devoted granddaughter.

At the inquest, the Coroner concluded that, despite being assessed as a high risk of falls and needing constant supervision, Mr S suffered a fall whilst being unsupervised. They said that Mr S then developed pneumonia as a result of the fall and his subsequent lack of mobility, which sadly caused his death.

Following the inquest the Trust admitted liability for Mr S’s death and Mr S’s family were offered financial compensation.
