Jewellery industry giants agree to join forces

The British Jewellers’ Association (BJA) and the National Association of Goldsmiths will be combined to form the National Association of Jewellers.

The two trade bodies agreed to merge following a vote at London’s Goldsmiths’ Hall earlier this month.

Royds partner Stephen Welfare attended the extraordinary general meeting to act as the official scrutiniser.

He has worked closely with the BJA for a number of years, offering intellectual property advice to members as part of the organisation’s Copywatch scheme.

The combined body will represent over 2,000 businesses and members hope the merger will benefit both retailers and their customers.

Gary Wroe, the BJA’s chairman, said: “Combining the knowledge and expertise from both associations, I am confident that the NAJ will have an invaluable influence on the jewellery industry, improving brand identity, ensuring the maximum consumer confidence and ultimately creating an association that our members can be proud of.”

Stephen added: “It is truly an historic event. The BJA was formed in 1887, and the NAG in 1894 so that’s nearly 250 years of collective representation and assistance to the UK jewellery trade.

“To bring these ancient and honourable associations together has taken many years of negotiation, lobbying and hard work so I congratulate the respective chairmen, CEO’s their staff and members. I was thrilled to be involved, and look forward to being of assistance to members of the new NAJ.”
