Future Space & RWK Goodman – Supporting scaling businesses in Bristol

Posted in Corporate, Tech

Why Bristol?

With our Bristol office having been open for just over a year, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on why we think the city is a great place to base and grow a business.

Instead of purely sharing our own thoughts, we thought we would speak to a few scaling businesses based in Bristol to offer their views on why the city is a good place for their growth and to showcase just some of the amazing innovation going on in this region.

It’s hard to think of somewhere better placed for this than Future Space – located at the University of the West of England, Future Space is a multi-award-winning innovation centre for trailblazing tech businesses. Our lawyers have long supported Future Space and the businesses based there, so while our Corporate Partner, Scott Preece, was there to deliver a workshop to businesses seeking investment on “Scaling up to Series A”, we took the opportunity to chat to Future Space’s Centre Director and a handful of the brilliant entrepreneurs who use the centre as a base.

For more on Future Space and their answers to the question, “Why Bristol?”, see the video below:

What makes Bristol a great place for entrepreneurs?

Professor Matt Freeman - Centre Director at Future Space

I think Bristol is a really interesting place in terms of innovation... Statistically speaking it's still true that a start-up looking to establish itself here is more likely to succeed than even in London, for example.

For me, I think that really comes down to the fact that it is just such a thriving, dynamic, creative sort of ecosystem
that is also really supportive of growth and collaboration.

Bristol is a really good place to grow a business, partly because of places like Future Space.

Bristol also has a great community of advisors who have been through it before (like us at RWK Goodman), who have advised many scaling businesses, as well as lots of founders who have been through the same journey.

We've always been based in Bristol, and I think that there's a real ecosystem with the universities but also with the other incubators around this area where there's a lot of expertise.

Particularly being based here at Future Space, we share equipment ideas with other companies so it's a really supportive community to be a part of.

Bristol has this deeply rooted aerospace heritage with really big companies like Airbus, Rolls-Royce and GKN all based here, so we have access to a great talent pool, cutting edge research and really a very extensive supply chain that gives us all the ingredients we need to build and grow Sora.

Bristol is a vibrant city with a very good pool of talent and is large enough to support that talent pool and have a draw for people
to come here to have an interesting time alongside having good work, so they can find companies to join while allowing us access
to a wide pool of people.
