Expert on incapacity elected to new Court of Protection group

Withy King, has been appointed Property and Affairs Solicitors’ representative of the newly-formed Bristol Court of Protection Users Group.

Tony Spiers MBE, is one of a small group of solicitors and barristers elected to the new Bristol users group to discuss and influence any issues arising from the Court of Protection’s work and report any developments back to the wider legal profession. Tony is already a member of the national Court of Protection Users Group and the Law Society’s Wills and Equity Committee.

“The Court of Protection looks after the affairs of people who are no longer able to do so themselves by appointing a deputy to act on their behalf. It’s a remarkable role and a privilege to be entrusted to make decisions for those who can’t,” said Tony. “I am pleased to be elected to the Bristol Court of Protection User Group where I look forward to representing all those working as property and affairs deputies for clients in this area.”

Withy King has a team which deals specifically with Powers of Attorney, Deputyships, Statutory Wills and Trusts. Working as part of this team, Tony has dedicated his career to private client law; in the last 15 years, he has specialised in Court of Protection work and dealing with the affairs of those without the capacity to make their own decisions, whether through illness, injury or old age.

Tony was the Founder Chairman of the West of England Branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) in 1993 and is a member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists (ACTAPS), which are the leading specialist professional bodies in these areas of law.

In 2005 Tony was appointed MBE for his services to the legal profession and the community in the West of England.
