£185,000 compensation awarded for a delay in diagnosing and treating sepsis leading to stroke

J was 53 when she attended the Great Western Hospital in Swindon with abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a large inflammatory mass.

Unfortunately, surgery was not performed on J’s abdomen until 14 days later, by which time she had developed sepsis. The sepsis, in turn, caused her blood to clot more easily which resulted in her having a stroke two months later.

As a result of the stroke, J was affected by brain damage resulting in hemiplegia and cognitive deficit and required significant care.

Several years later, J died from an unrelated cause and her claim against The Great Western Hospital was bought on behalf of her estate. The award of £185,000 will compensate J’s family for the cost of care, loss of earnings, travel costs and other expenses incurred by J and her family.
