A lot has changed since we started. So have we.

Since we were established in 1873, a lot has changed for our firm and for the legal industry. But one thing remains the same.

Our founding principles were to provide an outstanding level of personal service to our clients. That still drives everything we do.

We give our clients pragmatic and proactive advice that helps them manage their business or personal life, whatever challenges they face. Here are a few more facts that help our clients choose us again and again.

Size

We have grown to become a highly successful, innovative and forward thinking law firm.

Our principal offices are in Bath, London, Oxford and Swindon. Whether there are local, national or international elements, we have the depth and breadth to help our clients achieve all their legal goals.

We have strong relationships with our communities. Particularly in the city of our origin, Bath, where we are the official legal partners of Bath Rugby.

We are a Top 100 law firm, with a turnover of around £36m, 65 partners and over 470 staff.

In 2018, we were ranked in the Sunday Times Top 100 Best Mid-Sized Companies to work for, for the fifth consecutive year.

Breadth of services

We use our experience across the full range of commercial and private law sectors to put our clients ahead of the curve. We personalise our services to match our clients’ needs. They know they can call on our expert advice at every turn. And they trust us to get it right, first time round.

We have specialist teams in specific industry sectors, such as agriculture and rural business, charities, technology and media, horseracing and bloodstock, property, construction and engineering and specialist medical negligence and personal injury particularly for catastrophic injury, brain, spinal and chronic pain conditions. We also deal with private legal needs from wills and probate and inheritance trust issues, family law and mediation and arrangements for children and finances to more complex non-domiciliary tax arrangements and high net worth wealth protection, trusts and estate planning.

We are also ranked in the UK’s leading guides to law. In the 2018 edition of The Legal 500, we achieved eight top tier rankings for six practice areas, five partners are named as ‘leading lawyers’ and a further 74 lawyers are recommended, with three lawyers ranked in the “Next Generation Lawyers” category. In Chambers and Partners 2019, we achieved 19 team rankings across the UK and High Net Worth guides, including seven top tier rankings and 38 of our lawyers are ranked as “Leaders in their Field”.

Gender pay gap reporting

We believe that identifying the gender pay gap is useful in terms of creating conversations about equality, diversity and reward. As a business, we are already working towards narrowing our gender pay gap as reflected in the increasing number of women who have been successful in achieving promotions at associate, senior associate and partner level in recent years.

Our business is built on our people. It is because we have such a great team that we are able to provide our clients with a first class service. To us, equal opportunities is all about enabling each and every person in our firm to achieve their potential, while we believe diversity enriches our culture and brings fresh thinking and new perspectives to our clients.

We are committed to equality and diversity but we recognise that there is always room to do more. We welcome the opportunity to shine a light on this area and we are confident that by continuing to promote and support equality and diversity we will reduce our gender pay gap over time.
